So September 16th was a Friday which meant it was a pretty lackadaisical day at schools throughout Cape Town. We spent most of our time at Hout Bay working with kids in the morning. Now before I go any farther I have to tell you about my roommate from Germany, Julia, who has been with me for a week now.
She is twenty and doing some traveling before she goes back to Germany to university. I’ve learned that it is very common in Europe to have a “gap year” where you travel after high school and Europe, wish I would’ve known people do that four years ago! Anyway, she has been traveling now for about forty days and is leaving at the end of September to go to Australia for 8 months to travel and work to pay for more traveling. She is staying with me because two years ago she volunteered here and wanted to stop by to check on the kids.
Side note: She only volunteered five weeks and found it really hard to leave; I’ve only been here two weeks and I’m already getting attached to these kids. It will be hard to leave after three months I’m thinking.
Anyway, she’s a pretty girl and won over the hearts of the guys here. I think I met more of the boys this week just because they would come up to me and ask me where she was. One of the guys was “Mr. Bubbles.” His real name is Mohammed but he is called Mr. Bubbles because he likes to go around bursting everyone’s bubbles. Super nice kid. I’m thinking he is like 17? He is naturally Afrikaans speaking and dyslexic but makes up for it with his voice. He can sing lights out, maybe good enough to make a living out of it. In the video you can hear him reference Julia, it was hilarious. He actually has already recorded a couple songs so I’ll probably be posting video of him often. He is also Muslim and his dad is the Imam ul-masjid. He let us go visit the mosque. I would post that video but it is about an hour long and hard to hear at times.
This is one of those things that is probably funnier when you are actually here. Every now and then if it gets quiet around the house I will play the video and Julia gets really embarrassed but I literally lol every time that I watch it. Oh and he asked me if I had seen the movie American Pie. He wondered if all students in America were like that. SMH. If you’ve seen the movie you’ll understand.
So since the video is HD it is too big to upload here. You will have to click on the link and go watch it on YouTube:
